Worked example and interpretation
To convert 5 kilometres to miles, first express the distance in metres: 5 × 1,000 = 5,000 m. One international land mile is 1,609.344 m, so 5,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.106856… miles. The table shows the same distance in other units.
What to check
Land miles are not nautical miles, and length is not area. Metres to centimetres multiplies by 100; square metres to square centimetres multiplies by 10,000. Keep enough decimal places when using the result in another calculation.
