UNDERSTAND THE HOW

More than a result. An explanation.

We calculate mean, median and population standard deviation. Use a decimal point and separate values with semicolons, spaces or newlines.

mean = Σx / n; σ = √(Σ(x − mean)² / n)
Assumptions and limitations

Up to 10,000 finite values, between −10¹² and 10¹². Population deviation, not sample deviation.

A simple example

2;4;4;4;5;5;7;9: mean 5 and deviation 2.

Are my inputs stored?

Worked example and interpretation

For 2; 4; 4; 4; 5; 5; 7; 9, the sum is 40 across 8 values, so the mean is 5. The two middle sorted values are 4 and 5, giving a median of 4.5. The population standard deviation is 2.

What to check

Outliers can shift the mean substantially. Compare the median and keep units consistent. This standard deviation divides by n; a sample estimate uses n − 1 and differs.
