More than a result. An explanation.
We subtract the years and check whether the birthday has occurred by the reference date. We also count calendar days.

For February 29 births, the birthday is considered March 1 in non-leap years. This is not a legal age calculation.
A simple example
January 1, 2000 to January 1, 2026: 26 years.

Worked example and interpretation
Someone born on May 10, 1990 is 35 on May 9, 2026 and 36 the next day. Subtracting calendar years alone gives the wrong age before the birthday.
What to check
The reference date can be past or future. Do not divide elapsed days by 365 to obtain complete years: leap years and the birth month and day matter.
